Storm falls apart in third in road loss at Barrie

BARRIE – The Guelph Storm yielded six goals in a span of six minutes and 45 seconds in the third period as they were clobbered 8-2 by the Barrie Colts in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at the Barrie Molson Centre.

The setback was the fifth consecutive road loss for the Storm.

Barrie had scored the lone goal of the first period and the teams scored once apiece in the second.

Zach Poirier tied it for the Storm at 2:36 of the third.

However, Barrie started its onslaught just under two minutes later.

Jason Willms and Ben Hawerchuk had scored earlier in the game for Barrie. Goals in the third-period spree were by Hawerchuk (4:30), Jacob Tortora (4:59), Jaden Peca (5:52), Lucas Chiodo (8:45), Tyler Tucker (8:54) and Hawerchuk again (11:15).

Isaac Ratcliffe had the other goal for the Storm while Liam Hawel, Jack Hanley and Domenico Commisso each had one assist in the game.

Chiodo had three assists for Barrie while Matej Pekar, Ryan Suzuki and Tortora had two apiece and Justin Murray, Willms and Aidan Brown had one each.

The Colts outshot the Storm 52-43 and went 2-for-6 on their power play while the Storm went 1-for-3.

Nico Daws was tagged with the loss in net for the Storm while Kai Edmonds collected the win for Barrie.

The Storm remains second in the Midwest Division at 12-6-3-3 while Barrie is fourth in the Central Division at 13-11-1-0.

The Storm’s back in action Sunday with a game against the North Bay Battalion (11-11-1-1) at North Bay Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m.
