Storm grabs another Saturday win over Attack

OWEN SOUND – Isaac Ratcliffe’s goal in a shootout proved to be the winner as the Guelph Storm edged the Owen Sound Attack 6-5 in OHL play Saturday night at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.

The Storm also beat the Attack at Owen Sound seven days earlier.

This time Barret Kirwin’s third goal of the game with 16 seconds to go in regulation time tied the score and forced a five-minute overtime period that was scoreless.

After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for seven goals in the second, four of them by the Storm.

Owen Sound outshot the Storm 53-36 and both teams were 1-for-3 on their power plays.

Kirwin had his hat trick for the Storm while Isaac Ratcliffe and Dmitri Samorukov also scored. James McEwan assisted on two of the goals while single assists were given to Ryan Merkley, Garrett McFadden, Owen Lalonde, Samorukov, Nate Schnarr and Givani Smith.

Jonah Gadjovich scored twice for Owen Sound while Sean Durzi, Matthew Struthers and Daylon Groulx also scored. Ethan Szypula and Brady Lyle each had two assists while Struthers, Markus Phillips, Gadjovich, Aidan Dudas, Durzi and Luke Beamish each had one.

Anthony Popovich was the winning goaltender for the Storm while Mack Guzda took the loss for the Attack. Guzda replaced starter Riley Daniels at 15:51 of the second after Kirwin scored a shorthanded goal that put the Storm up 4-3. That goal came 15 seconds after Owen Sound had tied the score.

The Storm is second in the Midwest Division at 14-10-1-2. They’re five points behind the division-leading Kitchener Rangers (17-9-2-0) and one point ahead of Owen Sound (13-10-1-3).

The win was the fourth in five games for the Storm and it was the fourth time in six games that the Storm needed to play more than regulation time before a winner was decided.

Next game for the Storm is Wednesday when they’re to play the East Division-leading Hamilton Bulldogs (15-6-3-3) at Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
