Storm grounded in shootout by Windsor

WINDSOR – Daniel D’Amico’s goal in a shootout lifted the Windsor Spitfires to a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at the Windsor WFCU Centre.

D’Amico was the 16th player to shoot in the shootout and the fifth to score as the teams had two players apiece net goals in the opening five players per team segment of the shootout.

Zach Poirier and Isaac Ratcliffe, Guelph’s first two shooters, scored as did Curtis Douglas and Luke Kutkevicius, Windsor’s second and third shooters.

The teams had scored once apiece during regulation time, both goals coming in the second period.

Chris Playfair scored for the hosts at 5:10 of the period. Cole Purboo and D’Amico had assists.

Ratcliffe responded for the Storm just under 10 minutes later. Assists went to Nate Schnarr and Ryan Merkley.

Guelph goaltender Anthony Popovich kept the game going when he stopped a penalty shot by Cody Morgan in the overtime period.

The Storm fired 32 shots at the Windsor net guarded by Michael DiPietro while Popovich faced 29 shots.

Both teams had two power-play opportunities and Ratcliffe’s goal was the lone power-play goal of the match.

The point for the shootout loss pushed the Storm to the top of the Midwest Division. They lead at 10-4-3-2 while the London Knights (11-4-2-0) are a point behind in second, Owen Sound Attack (10-7-0-2) is three points behind in third and Kitchener Rangers (9-8-2-0) are five points behind in fourth. The Erie Otters (8-9-1-0) are fifth.

Next up for the Storm is an 11 a.m. match against the Mississauga Steelheads (11-6-2-0) Wednesday at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre.
