Storm hands Saginaw a thrashing

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm struck for seven consecutive goals on their way to an 8-2 thrashing of the Saginaw Spirit in Ontario Hockey League play Wednesday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The scoring spree came after the Storm yielded the first goal of the game. They led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 7-2 after the second.

Nick Suzuki and Domenico Commisso hit for two goals apiece for the Storm while singletons were netted by Cedric Ralph, Liam Hawel, Nate Schnarr and Zachary Roberts. Sean Durzi and Isaac Ratcliffe each had three assists while Ty Collins, Owen Lalonde, Schnarr and Keegan Stevenson had two apiece and Suzuki and Ben McFarlane had one each.

Cole Perfetti had a goal and an assist for Saginaw while Ryan McLeod scored the other goal.

The Storm outshot Saginaw 35-31 and went 2-for-3 on their power play and Saginaw went 1-for-4.

Anthony Popovich turned aside 29 shots for the win in the Guelph net. Ivan Prosvetov started for Saginaw and allowed six goals in the first half of the game. Tristan Lennox played the second half and gave up two goals.

The result allowed the Storm to close to three points behind Saginaw in the battle for third in the Western Conference.

London Knights lead the conference at 34-7-5-1 and they’re followed by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (31-10-5-1), Saginaw (30-14-2-2), Guelph (26-13-5-4) and Owen Sound Attack (23-21-2-2). London and Sault Ste. Marie have a game in hand on the following trio.

The Storm is to head east this weekend for games against the Ottawa 67’s (36-9-3-1) at Ottawa’s TD Place Friday at 7 p.m. and the Kingston Frontenacs (12-36-1-0) at Kingston’s Leon’s Centre Saturday at 7 p.m.
