Storm hold on to leapfrog Flint in conference standings

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm built a three-goal lead and then held on to edge the Flint Firebirds 5-4 in OHL play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm scored the lone two goals of the first period and then extended their lead to 4-1 by the end of the second period.

The Storm received goals from five players – Cooper Walker, Ben McFarlane, Jake Karabela, Charlie Paquette and Chandler Romeo. McFarlane also assisted on two of the goals while single assists went to Jake Murray, Michael Buchinger, Walker, Braeden Bowman, Max Namestnikov, Ryan McGuire, Valentin Zhugin and Matthew Poitras.

Tristan Bertucci had two goals for Flint while the other ones were scored by Braeden Kressler and Amadeus Lombardi who assisted on each of the three goals he didn’t score. Dmitry Kuzmin, Gavin Hayes and Tyler Deline each had one assist.

The Storm was outshot 34-29. Flint went 1-for-8 on its power play while Guelph went 1-for-7.

Patrick Leaver had 30 saves for the Storm while Will Cranley had 24 for Flint.

The win allows the Storm to leapfrog the Firebirds in the Western Conference standings. The Storm’s sixth at 23-21-4-1, four points behind the fifth-place Saginaw Spirit (26-20-2-1) and seven behind the third-place Sarnia Sting (26-16-4-2).

Flint is seventh at 23-25-3-1 and is four points ahead of the eighth-place Kitchener Rangers (22-24-2-0) who have four games in hand.

The Storm are to host the second-place London Knights (35-13-1-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre and play the Peterborough Petes (fourth in Eastern Conference at 26-20-1-2) at the Peterborough Memorial Centre Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
