Storm, Kitchener to start series March 22

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm and Kitchener Rangers have released the schedule for their Ontario Hockey League Western Conference quarter-final playoff series.

The Storm will have home-ice advantage in the series thanks to a fourth-place finish in the conference. Kitchener was fifth.

The best-of-seven affair is to start March 22 at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Storm is also to host Game 2 at the Sleeman Centre March 24 at 2 p.m.

The series shifts to Kitchener’s Memorial Auditorium for Games 3 and 4. The third game is slated for March 26 and the fourth for March 28. Game time is 7 p.m. for both games.

Game 5 is to be played March 29 at the Sleeman Centre if it’s necessary. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Game 6 is to go at Kitchener March 31 starting at 6 p.m. if it’s needed.

If the series goes its seven-game limit, the seventh and deciding game is to be played at the Sleeman Centre April 2 starting at 7 p.m.

If the regular-season games between the two can be used as a measuring stick for the series, it could be a long one. The Storm and Rangers met eight times with Guelph winning four and Kitchener winning four, one in overtime.

The Storm won 5-2 at the Sleeman Centre Oct. 21, 6-2 at Kitchener Oct. 30, 8-1 at the Sleeman Centre Dec. 2 and 8-4 at Kitchener March 3. The Rangers won 5-0 at Kitchener Oct. 19, 4-3 in OT at Kitchener Jan. 11 and 5-2 at the Sleeman Centre both Feb. 15 and March 10.

This will be the second consecutive year the Storm and Rangers will meet in the conference quarter-finals. The Rangers won in six games last year.

It’ll also be the fifth time the Storm and Rangers will meet in the playoffs. Kitchener has won the last three meetings as they won last year, 4-1 in conference quarter-finals in 2013 and 4-1 in conference semifinals in 2003. The Storm swept a conference quarter-final in 2002.

The Guelph Platers and Kitchener never met in the playoffs before the Platers moved to Owen Sound.
