Storm knocked out of playoffs with loss in overtime

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm’s OHL season came to an end Sunday at the Sleeman Centre when they were edged 4-3 in overtime by the Sarnia Sting to give the visitors a 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final.

The Sting had won the first three games of the series, but the locals fought back with two consecutive wins and were trying to force the series to its seven-game limit.

Nolan Burke’s goal at 4:05 of overtime gave Sarnia the win in both the game and the series. It put the Sting ahead for the first time in the game, although they never trailed by more than a goal.

Matthew Poitras gave the Storm the early lead with the lone goal of the first period.

Max Namestnikov’s goal midway through the second period was sandwiched between a pair of Sarnia goals.

Charlie Paquette restored the Storm’s lead at 4:48 of the third before former Storm forward Sasha Pastujov scored his second of the game two and a half minutes later to pull Sarnia even and eventually force the overtime.

Ty Voit scored Sarnia’s other goal.

Braeden Bowman, Jett Luchanko, Ryan McGuire and Isaac Enright each had an assist for the Storm.

Luca Del Bel Belluz had two assists for Sarnia while Ethan Del Mastro, Pastujov, Burke and Zach Filak each had one.

The Sting outshot the Storm 32-19. Sarnia took all four shots on net recorded in the overtime and also limited the locals to three shots in the third period.

Both teams had four power plays. The Storm scored on one of their while Sarnia was held scoreless with the manpower advantage.

Patrick Leaver had 28 saves for the Storm while Benjamin Gaudreau had 16 for Sarnia.

The Sting advance to play the Saginaw Spirit in the conference semifinals. The Spirit doubled Flint Firebirds 6-3 in the seventh and final game of their conference quarter-final Monday.

The other Western Conference semifinal pits the London Knights against the Kitchener Rangers.

The Eastern Conference semifinals have the Ottawa 67’s playing the Peterborough Petes in one and the North Bay Battalion and Barrie Colts meeting in the other.

The Kitchener-London series is to start Thursday while all four series are to have games Friday.
