Storm lays a beating on Flint Firebirds

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm struck for six goals in the first period as they put an 8-2 smackdown on the Flint Firebirds in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm scored five of those goals in the first 12:09 of the game as they cruised to the one-sided win. The hosts led 6-1 at the end of the first period and 8-1 after the second.

Barret Kirwin and Cedric Ralph scored twice apiece for the Storm while single goals were added by Alexey Toropchenko, Cam Hillis, Zach Poirier and Isaac Ratcliffe. Ryan Merkley assisted on three of the goals and Poirier, Liam Hawel and Ralph each had two assists. Getting one assist apiece were Dmitri Samorukov, Domenico Commisso, Tag Bertuzzi, Toropchenko, Kirwin, Ratcliffe and Hillis.

C.J. Clarke and Riley McCourt scored for Flint and Hunter Holmes assisted on both goals. Ethan Keppen also had an assist.

Flint outshot the Storm 42-37 thanks to an 18-8 advantage in the third period. Both teams scored a power-play goal, the Storm on two power plays and the Firebirds on four.

The Storm also won 52 of the game’s 75 faceoffs.

Anthony Popovich picked up the win in the Guelph net while Luke Cavallin was charged with the loss. Cavallin had two stints in net for Flint as he started, gave up three goals in 8:36 and was relieved the remainder of the period by Emanuel Vella who also yielded three goals. Cavallin returned and played the second and third periods.

The Storm (11-5-3-2) and Owen Sound Attack (12-7-1-2) are tied for second in the Midwest Division, a point behind the London Knights (13-4-2-0). Flint is fifth in the West Division at 2-19-1-0.

The Storm and London are to clash Saturday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 3:30 p.m. The game is to be shown live on Sportsnet.
