Storm lose to Rangers, tumble back into Western cellar

KITCHENER – The Guelph Storm suffered their second loss to the Kitchener Rangers in four days as they were downed 4-1 by the Rangers in OHL play Tuesday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

The Rangers broke a 1-1 tie with a goal late in the second period and two more in the first two and a half minutes of the third.

Michael Buchinger scored the lone goal for the Storm with help from Max Namestnikov and Matthew Poitras.

Filip Mešár scored a pair of goals for the hosts while single goals were added by Francesco Pinelli and Adrian Misaljevic. Assists went to Carson Rehkopf, Simon Motew, Matthew Sop, Pinelli, Joseph Serpa and Jesse Fishman.

A total of three minor penalties were called in the game. The Storm was scoreless on their lone power play while Kitchener was scoreless in two power plays.

Guelph outshot Kitchener 39-38.

Jacob Oster had 34 saves for the Storm while Marcus Vandenberg had 38 saves.

The loss dropped the Storm back in the basement of the Western Conference. They’re at 9-15-2-1 on the season and are a point behind the Rangers (11-13-0-0). They’re three points behind the Soo Greyhounds (8-10-4-4) and four behind the Erie Otters (11-11-0-3).

The Storm have a 3-in-3 weekend this weekend as they’re to host the Owen Sound Attack (tied for 3rd in Western Conference at 16-8-1-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Sleeman Centre, play the Attack at Owen Sound’s Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre at 7:30 p.m. and host the Ottawa 67’s (1st in Eastern Conference at 21-4-0-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.

The 67’s are ranked fourth in the CHL while the London Knights (17-7-1-0) are ninth and the Saginaw Spirit (17-7-2-0) are 10th.
