Storm nipped as Owen Sound closes in

OWEN SOUND – The Guelph Storm saw the gap to the chasing Owen Sound Attack fall to three points as the host Attack scored a 2-1 victory Saturday night in Ontario Hockey League play at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.

The Storm is third in the Midwest Division at 23-19-1-3 and Owen Sound fourth at 20-19-2-5. More importantly, the Storm is tied for sixth in the Western Conference standings with the Windsor Spitfires (23-19-2-2) while Owen Sound is eighth. Top eight qualify for the playoffs, although the eighth-placed team is likely to have the daunting task of facing the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (39-5-2-1), the only team in the league to have already clinched a playoff berth with 21 games to go in its regular season, in the conference quarter-finals.

All of the scoring in Saturday’s game was limited to the second period.

Cam Hillis opened the scoring on a power play for the Storm at 7:40 before Cade Robinson squared the score for the host Attack 69 seconds later. Ethan Szypula netted the winner for the hosts on a power play with 1:34 to go in the period.

Garrett McFadden and Ryan Merkley assisted on the goal by Hillis.

Alan Lyszczarczyk assisted on both Owen Sound goals while Trenton Bourque and Aidan Dudas each had one assist.

The Attack outshot the Storm 47-25 and both teams had a power-play goal, the Storm on four power plays and the Attack on five.

Olivier Lafreniere stopped 24 shots to get the win and nod as first star of the game for the Attack while Nico Daws took the loss in the Guelph net as he made 45 saves and was the game’s second star in his eighth appearance of the season and first since Jan. 4.

The Storm has 22 games to go in its regular season starting with a game against the London Knights, second in the Midwest at 26-17-2-2, Sunday at 2 p.m. at London’s Budweiser Gardens.
