Storm overpowered by Ottawa in final opener
OTTAWA – The Guelph Storm surrendered three power-play goals in a span of one minute and 36 seconds midway through the third period as they were dropped 7-2 by the Ottawa 67’s Thursday night at TD Place in the opening game of the Ontario Hockey League’s championship series.
The three goals were scored after Storm defenceman Fedor Gordeev was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for boarding.
Ottawa led 2-0 at the end of the first period before the teams scored twice apiece in the second.
Isaac Ratcliffe and Nick Suzuki scored the goals for the Storm while assists were awarded to MacKenzie Entwistle, Nate Schnarr and Dmitri Samorukov.
Sasha Chmelevski and Tye Felhaber each had a pair of goals for the 67’s while singletons were netted by Lucas Chiodo, Marco Rossi and Noel Hoefenmayer. Graeme Clarke, Guelph native Austen Keating, Kody Clark and Chmelevski each had two assists while Mitchell Hoelscher, Hoefenmayer and Rossi had one each.
The Storm outshot Ottawa 39-26, but were held to a single goal on nine power plays while Ottawa went 4-for-5 on its power play.
Anthony Popovich was tagged with the loss in net for the Storm. He had 19 saves while winning netminder Michael DiPietro had 37 saves.
The win runs Ottawa’s undefeated streak in the playoffs to 13 games.
The Storm had suffered a one-sided loss early in each of their last two series as they were blanked 7-0 by the London Knights in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinal and downed 7-2 by the Saginaw Spirit in the opening game of the conference final. Guelph came back to win both of those series.
