Storm puts Firebirds away early this time

FLINT, Mich. – The Guelph Storm weren’t about to have troubles with the Flint Firebirds a second time this week.

Saturday night at the Dort Federal Event Center, the Storm scored twice in the first four and a half minutes on their way to an 8-1 victory in Ontario Hockey League play.

Monday, the Storm needed a goal in overtime to edge the Firebirds 5-4 at the Sleeman Centre.

Saturday, the Storm led 4-0 at the end of the first period and 6-1 after the second.

Isaac Ratcliffe connected for his second hat trick in as many nights as he lifted his totals to 43 goals on the season and seven on the week. His goal total beats the 41 he scored last season and he now has 68 points, the same as he amassed during the 2017-18 regular season.

Nick Suzuki hit for two goals and three assists while Cedric Ralph, Sean Durzi and Keegan Stevenson each added single goals. Dmitri Samorukov had three assists while Durzi had two and Stevenson, Nate Schnarr, Ratcliffe, Markus Phillips, Domenico Commisso and Liam Hawel each had one.

Jake Durham scored a power-play goal in the second for Flint while assists on the goal went to Dennis Busby and Hunter Holmes.

The Storm outshot the Firebirds 41-37 and were scoreless on their only power play while Flint was 1-for-3 on its power play.

Anthony Popovich collected the win in the Guelph net while starter Luke Cavallin took the loss for Flint. He allowed five goals before being replaced by Emanuel Vella at 1:59 of the second. Cavallin had 11 saves and Vella had twice as many.

The Storm is fourth in the Western Conference at 32-16-6-4 while Flint is 10th at 11-44-5-0.

London Knights lead the conference at 40-11-6-1 while the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds are second at 38-13-6-1- and Saginaw Spirit third at 38-15-2-3.

The Storm and Knights are to tangle Tuesday at London’s Budweiser Gardens. Game time is 7 p.m.
