Storm rallies in third to nip Barrie

GUELPH – Three goals in the third period sparked the Guelph Storm to a 4-3 victory over the Barrie Colts in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm trailed 2-0 at the end of the first period, but battled back into a 3-3 standoff by the midway point of the third.

Nate Schnarr fired home the winner with 6:17 to go in regulation time as he completed a hat trick. Ryan Merkley scored the other goal while Domenico Commisso had three assists, Isaac Ratcliffe had two and Merkley and Cam Hillis had one apiece.

Ryan Suzuki, Jaden Peca and Lucas Chiodo scored the goals for Barrie while Chiodo had two assists and Matej Pekar, Suzuki and Peca had one each.

Anthony Popovich made 25 saves for the win in the Guelph net while Jet Greaves, who played junior B for the Guelph Hurricanes last winter, had 35 saves in the Barrie net.

The Storm went 3-for-8 on their power play while the Colts went 1-for-4.

Guelph also won 45 of the 64 faceoffs in the game.

The Storm (10-4-3-1) is tied with the London Knights (11-4-2-0) for first in the Midwest Division. Barrie is tied for fourth in the Central Division at 9-8-1-0.

The Storm is to play the Windsor Spitfires (8-9-0-1) at Windsor’s WFCU Centre Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
