Storm rallies to clip Greyhounds in overtime

GUELPH – Isaac Ratcliffe’s power-play goal in overtime gave the Guelph Storm a 5-4 victory over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The goal in OT capped a comeback for the Storm that saw them rally from a 4-1 deficit with 11 and a half minutes to go in regulation time.

The Greyhounds led 2-1 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second. Sault Ste. Marie added a pair of goals 50 seconds apart before the third period was two minutes old.

The Storm came back to tie it with three goals in just over seven minutes, the tying goal coming with just over four minutes to play.

Ratcliffe and Liam Hawel scored twice each for the Storm while Cam Hillis netted the other goal. Nate Schnarr assisted on three of the goals while Ryan Merkley had two assists and Hillis had one.

Scoring for Sault Ste. Marie were Jordan Sambrook, Morgan Frost, Barrett Hayton and Keeghan Howdeshell. Collecting one assist each were Mac Hollowell, Hayton, Ryan Roth, Tye Kartye and Cole MacKay.

The Storm was outshot 47-27 and went 2-for-6 on their power play while the Greyhounds went 2-for-3.

Anthony Popovich stopped 43 shots for the win in the Guelph net while Matthew Villalta took the loss for Sault Ste. Marie with 22 saves.

The Storm is second in the Midwest Division at 12-5-3-3 while Sault Ste. Marie leads the West Division at 14-6-4-1.

The game was the first of a 3-in-3 weekend for the Storm. They’re to play the Barrie Colts (12-11-1-0) at the Barrie Molson Centre Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and North Bay Battalion (11-11-1-1) at North Bay Memorial Gardens Sunday at 2 p.m.
