Storm rides fast start to win over Petes

PETERBOROUGH – Four goals in the first period started the Guelph Storm on the way to a 5-3 victory over the Peterborough Petes in Ontario Hockey League play Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

While the Storm grabbed the early lead, the Petes cut the gap to a single goal with three goals in the first six minutes of the second period.

That was all the scoring in the game until Isaac Ratcliffe potted an empty-netter with 22 seconds to go in the contest.

That goal was Ratcliffe’s second of the game while Alexey Toropchenko, Keegan Stevenson and Liam Hawel also scored for the Storm. Hawel, Nate Schnarr, Cedric Ralph, Owen Lalonde, Toropchenko, Fedor Gordeev, Sean Durzi and Dmitri Samorukov each had one assist.

The Storm outshot Peterborough 22-7 in the first period and 39-33 overall, but were scoreless on their two power plays while the Petes went 1-for-4.

Anthony Popovich had 30 saves for his fourth consecutive win and 20th of the season for the Storm. Hunter Jones was charged with the loss. He played the first period while Tye Austin played the final two and stopped all 16 shots he faced.
