Storm rides first-period goals to win over North Bay

NORTH BAY — A pair of goals in the first period started the Guelph Storm on its way to a 3-1 victory over the North Bay Battalion Thursday in OHL play at the North Bay Memorial Gardens.

The Storm added a single goal in the second period while North Bay’s Justin Brazeau put an end to the shutout bid by goaltender Liam Herbst when he scored a short-handed goal with 3:10 to go in the game.

James McEwan scored twice for the Storm while Liam Hawel had the other goal. Albert Michnac assisted on all three goals while Kyle Rhodes, Hawel and Austin Hall each had one assist.

North Bay outshot Guelph 38-32 and neither team managed a power-play goal. The Battalion had six power plays, one more than the Storm.

Julian Sime took the loss in the North Bay net. He yielded the three Guelph goals on 19 shots before being replaced by Brent Moran at 16:50 of the second period. Moran stopped 13 shots.

The Storm is 10th in the West Division at 18-27-3-2 and is 12 points behind the eighth-place Flint Firebirds. Top eight qualify for the playoffs.

North Bay is ninth in the East at 19-28-3-1, one point behind the Niagara IceDogs in the race for the final playoff position in the East.

The Storm is to play the Soo Greyhounds (36-13-2-1) at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie Friday at 7:07 p.m. and the Firebirds (24-21-1-4) at Flint’s Dort Federal Event Center Sunday at 4 p.m.
