Storm rings out 2017 with loss to Sudbury

SUDBURY – The Guelph Storm surrendered three consecutive goals as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Sudbury Wolves Sunday at the Sudbury Community Arena to wrap up the 2017 segment of their OHL season.

The Storm scored the first and last goals of the game, both on power plays, but the Wolves won it with their three consecutive even-strength goals.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first and Sudbury led 3-1 after the second.

Nate Schnarr and Tag Bertuzzi hit for a goal apiece for the Storm while Garrett McFadden and Ryan Merkley assisted on both goals.

Kirill Nizhnikov, Drake Pilon and Shane Bulitka scored the goals for Sudbury. Michael Pezzetta assisted on two of the goals while single assists went to Darian Pilon, Troy Lajeunesse, Bulitka and Ryan O’Bonsawin.

Jake McGrath made 31 saves for the win for Sudbury while Anthony Popovich had 18 saves for the Storm.

Guelph outshot Sudbury 33-21 and went 2-for-8 on the power play while the Wolves were scoreless on two power plays.

The Storm ends 2017 third in the Midwest Division at 18-14-1-3. They’re eight points behind the leading Kitchener Rangers (23-11-2-0) and one behind second-place London Knights (19-14-2-1).

Sudbury is fifth in the Central Division at 11-21-5-0.

Next up for the Storm is a match Thursday against the Niagara IceDogs (19-11-3-2) at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines. Game time is 7 p.m.

That’s the first of three games in four days for the Storm as they’re to host the Owen Sound Attack (14-15-1-5) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (32-3-2-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Storm is seventh in the Western Conference standings, six points ahead of eighth-place Owen Sound and one point behind a three-way tie for fourth involving the Windsor Spitfires (19-13-2-1), Saginaw Spirit (19-13-3-0) and London.
