Storm scores early, but falls to Sudbury Wolves

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm squandered an early two-goal lead in their home opener as they were doubled 4-2 by the Sudbury Wolves in OHL play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm scored a pair of power-play goals in the first 11 minutes of the game, but Sudbury came back. Guelph was up 2-1 at the end of the first period before Sudbury grabbed a 3-2 lead by the end of the second.

Nate Schnarr and Liam Hawel scored the goals for the hosts while Alexey Toropchenko assisted on both goals. Dmitri Samorukov and Schnarr each had one assist.

Sudbury received goals from Shane Bulitka, Liam Ross, Drake Pilon and Quinton Byfield while assists were awarded to Byfield, Peter Stratis, Drake Pilon, Darian Pilon, Ross, David Levin and Owen Robinson.

The Storm was outshot 29-22, but scored on two of their three power plays while Sudbury scored on its only power play.

Anthony Popovich took the loss in the Guelph net while Jake McGrath picked up the win for Sudbury.

The loss drops the Storm’s record to 0-1-1-0 while the game was the season opener for Sudbury.

Next game for the Storm is Friday when they’re to host the Owen Sound Attack (0-1-0-0) at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
