Storm scores in each period to topple Soo

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm scored at least once in each period as they handed the Soo Greyhounds a 4-1 setback in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm had the lone goal of the first period and the lone goal of the second before the Greyhounds cut the gap to a single goal seven and a half minutes into the third.

The hosts secured the win with a pair of goals in the last four minutes of the third, the final goal coming on a power play with one second to go.

Scoring for the Storm were Cam Allen, Matthew Poitras, Luka Profaca and Cooper Walker. Poitras and Leo Hafenrichter each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Michael Buchinger, Jacob Maillet, Jake Karabela and Valentin Zhugin.

Rory Kerins scored for the Soo with help from Tye Kartye and Connor Toms.

The Storm outshot the Greyhounds 30-23 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while holding the Greyhounds scoreless on five power plays.

Owen Bennett had 22 saves in the win for the Storm while Samuel Ivanov had 26 saves in the loss for the Soo.

The Storm is fourth in the Western Conference at 5-4-1-0 while Soo is second at 7-4-0-0. London Knights lead at 8-0-0-0 and Kitchener Rangers are third at 6-3-0-0.

The locals are to start a stretch of four consecutive road games Tuesday when they’re to tangle with the Kitchener Rangers for the fifth time this season. Game time at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium is 7 p.m.

The Storm’s also to play the Greyhounds in Sault Ste. Marie Friday at 7:07 p.m. and next Saturday at 7:07 p.m. and the Knights in London Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
