Storm sees three-goal lead slip away in loss to Erie
GUELPH – The Guelph Storm squandered a three-goal lead as the Erie Otters scored the final three goals of the game, including the winner in overtime, to edge the Storm 5-4 in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.
The Storm had led 3-0 at the end of the first period before Erie narrowed the gap to 3-2 by the end of the second. The Storm scored early in the third, but Erie netted a pair of goals about six minutes apart to tie it and then scored the winner 3:10 into the extra period.
Nate Schnarr, Liam Hawel, Jack Hanley and Isaac Ratcliffe scored a goal apiece for the Storm while Cam Hillis assisted on three of the goals. Getting one assist each were Ratcliffe, Alexey Toropchenko, Domenico Commisso, Ryan Merkley and Schnarr.
Chad Yetman had a hat trick for Erie while Kurtis Henry and Kyle Maksimovich also scored, Maksimovich getting the winner. Daniel D’Amato and Gera Poddubnyi each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Joseph Mack, Danial Singer, Maksimovich, Brendan Sellan and Jack Duff.
Guelph outshot Erie 32-29, but the Otters had the only two shots on net in overtime. The Storm also went 1-for-3 on their power play while the Otters went 1-for-4 and the hosts dominated the faceoffs, winning 40 of the game’s 54.
Daniel Murphy picked up the win in net for Erie with 28 saves while Anthony Popovich made 23 saves in the Storm net.
Guelph leads the Midwest Division at 7-4-2-0 and are followed by the Owen Sound Attack (7-5-0-1), London Knights (6-4-2-0), Kitchener Rangers (6-5-2-0) and Erie (5-6-1-0).
The Storm is to host the Western Conference-leading Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (10-3-2-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
