Storm short on shots, but big on win over Kitchener

The Storm grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period although they were held to five shots in the frame. And they had a goal negated by goaltender interference.

The hosts extended their lead to 5-2 by the end of the second period and preserved the win with the lone goal of the third.

The play of goaltender Brayden Gillespie was also a factor as he made several timely saves to turn aside the pressing Rangers who were playing their third game in as many days.

Braeden Bowman had a pair of similar-looking goals for the Storm while single goals were added by Payton Robinson, Ben McFarlane, Max Namestnikov and Valentin Zhugin. Matthew Poitras had three assists while Michael Buchinger and Cooper Walker had two apiece and Jake Murray, Cam Allen, Ryan McGuire and Isaac Enright each had one.

Lleyton Moore and former Storm forward Danny Zhilkin scored for Kitchener while assists went to Hunter Brzustewicz at Ty Hollett.

Gillespie had 28 saves for the Storm while Marco Costantini had 11 for Kitchener.

The Storm went 2-for-5 on their power play and held the Rangers scoreless on four power plays.

The result leaves the Storm in seventh place in the Western Conference at 22-21-4-1 and the Rangers eighth at 21-23-2-0.

Windsor Spitfires lead the division at 32-12-3-1 and are followed by the London Knights (32-13-1-0), Sarnia Sting (25-15-4-2), Owen Sound Attack (25-17-4-1), Saginaw Spirit (25-20-2-0) and Flint Firebirds (23-22-3-1).

Sunday’s game was the first of three consecutive home games for the Storm. They’re to host Flint Friday at 7:30 p.m. and London Saturday at 7 p.m.
