Storm skates into break with win over Oshawa

OSHAWA – The Guelph Storm wasted little time starting on its way to an 8-5 victory over the Oshawa Generals to wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of its Ontario Hockey League season Sunday at Oshawa’s Tribute Communities Centre.

The Storm scored twice in the first two and a half minutes of the game and led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 5-3 after the second.

The locals never trailed in the game, but Oshawa did manage to tie the score just less than seven and a half minutes into the second period. However, the Storm regained the lead 1:15 later and never let it go.

Keegan Stevenson and Liam Hawel each had two goals for the Storm while Pavel Gogolev (his first since being acquired in a trade with the Peterborough Petes Friday), Nate Schnarr, Alexey Toropchenko and Owen Lalonde scored once each. Toropchenko had three assists, Hawel had two and goaltender Nico Daws, Gogolev, Mark Woolley, Daniil Chayka, Lalonde and Schnarr had one apiece.

Anthony Salinitri collected a hat trick for Oshawa and Serron Noel and William Ennis added one goal apiece. Danil Antropov assisted on two of the goals and single assists were awarded to Allan McShane, Mitchell Brewer, Kyle Bollers, Kyle MacLean, Eric Henderson and Noel.

Oshawa outshot the Storm 43-29 including a 29-15 margin after the first period. The Storm was scoreless on five power plays while the Generals went 1-for-3.

Daws made 38 saves for the win while Aidan Hughes took the loss in the Oshawa net.

Guelph (17-9-3-4) heads into the break tied with the Owen Sound Attack (19-11-1-2) tied for second in the Midwest Division. Oshawa (20-12-2-0) is second in the East Division.

The Storm, who swept their 3-in-3 weekend with wins over Peterborough Friday and Mississauga Steelheads Saturday, return from the break for a home-and-home series with the Hamilton Bulldogs. They’re to play at the Sleeman Centre Dec. 28 at 7:30 p.m. and at Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre Dec. 29 at 4 p.m.
