Storm slips by Erie in overtime

ERIE, Penn. – Cedric Ralph’s goal 66 seconds into overtime lifted the Guelph Storm to a 4-3 victory over the Erie Otters in Ontario Hockey League play at the Erie Insurance Arena Wednesday night.

That goal was the only Storm goal that wasn’t scored in the first period when the Guelph squad hit for three goals including two 35 seconds apart midway through the period.

The Storm led 3-1 after the first period and 3-2 after the second and Erie tied it up with 1:45 to go in regulation time.

Isaac Ratcliffe, Zachary Roberts and Dmitri Samorukov scored in the first period for the Storm. Samorukov had two assists while Nick Suzuki, Owen Lalonde, Zack Terry, Alexey Toropchenko, Nate Schnarr and Liam Hawel each had one.

Mathew MacDougall, Joseph Mack and Maxim Golod connected for a goal apiece for Erie while Chad Yetman and Jamie Drysdale each had two assists and Kurtis Henry had one.

The Storm outshot the Otters 35-30 and went 1-for-2 on their power play while Erie was scoreless on three power plays.

Anthony Popovich had 27 saves in the Storm’s fifth consecutive win. Cole Ceci had 31 saves in the Erie net.

With the win, the Storm can finish no lower than seventh in the Western Conference. They’re fourth at 34-16-6-4, seven behind the deadlocked duo of Saginaw Spirit (40-15-2-3) and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (39-14-5-1). Erie is ninth at 24-31-3-1 and can finish no higher than fifth in the conference.

The Storm has eight games left in its regular season starting with a Friday match at the Sleeman Centre against the Windsor Spitfires (24-29-4-3). Game time is 7:30 p.m.
