Storm slips by Flint in overtime

FLINT, Mich. – James McEwan’s goal after 4:55 of overtime lifted the Guelph Storm to a 3-2 victory over the Flint Firebirds in OHL play Saturday night at the Dort Federal Event Center.

That goal put the Storm ahead for the first time in the game.

The team traded goals in regulation time, Flint scoring first in the first and third periods.

The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second.

Garrett McFadden’s power-play goal for the Storm at 12:25 of the third tied the score 2-2 and forced the overtime.

Ryan Merkley had scored a power-play goal in the first period for the Storm. Nate Schnarr, Cam Hills, Merkley and McFadden each had an assist in the game.

Nicholas Caamano on a power play and C.J. Clarke scored for Flint. Assists went to Ryan Moore, Maurizio Colella, Caamano and Fedor Gordeev.

The Storm outshot Flint 45-40 and went 2-for-5 on its power play while Flint went 1-for-2.

Anthony Popovich was credited with the win in the Storm net while Garrett Forrest was tagged with the loss for Flint.

The Storm is fourth in the Midwest Division at 8-7-0-2 while Flint is fifth in the West Division at 6-9-2-0.

The Storm is to host the North Bay Battalion (6-9-2-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
