Storm slips by lowly Flint in overtime

GUELPH – Dmitri Samorukov connected for the winner in overtime to lift the Guelph Storm to a 5-4 victory over the Flint Firebirds in Ontario Hockey League play Monday afternoon at the Sleeman Centre.

Flint, 10th in the Western Conference, opened the scoring before the Storm, fourth in the conference, came back to lead 2-1 at the end of the first period and 4-3 at the end of the second. The Firebirds tied it midway through the third.

Isaac Ratcliffe, Cedric Ralph, Liam Hawel and Domenico Commisso scored in regulation time for the hosts. Nate Schnarr had two assists while single assists were awarded to Hawel, Samorukov, Commisso, Cedric Ralph, Ty Collins, Matthew Papais, Nick Suzuki and Ratcliffe.

Cody Morgan had a hat trick for Flint and Eric Uba scored the other goal. Ethan Keppen assisted on three of the goals and Dennis Busby and Jack Wismer each had two assists.

The Storm outshot Flint 46-34 and went 1-for-3 on their power play while the Firebirds went 2-for-4.

Anthony Popovich had the win in the Guelph net. He came in at 4:25 of the third period after starter Nico Daws was tossed after being assessed a match penalty for butt-ending. Popovich had 10 saves and Daws had 20.

Emanuel Villa took the loss in the Flint net despite making 41 saves.

The result leaves the Storm at 29-16-6-4 and Flint at 11-43-4-0.

The Storm’s to host the Erie Otters (23-30-2-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. in their next game.
