Storm snap losing streak with first win of 2023

GUELPH – Four goals in a span of three and a half minutes of the opening period helped the Guelph Storm break their three-game OHL losing streak with their first win of 2023.

Those four goals started the Storm on their way to a 7-2 victory over the Erie Otters Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm led 4-0 at the end of the first period and 6-2 after the second.

Valentin Zhugin struck for a hat trick for the Storm and he also had an assist. Getting the other goals for the hosts were Ben McFarlane, Braeden Bowman, Jake Karabela and Max Namestnikov. Jett Luchanko and Cooper Walker each had two assists while Charlie Paquette, Matthew Poitras, Michael Buchinger, McFarlane and Zackary Sandhu each had one.

Malcolm Spence and Taeo Artichuk scored two minutes apart in the second period for Erie. Assists went to Ondrej Molnar, Pano Fimis and Liam Gilmartin.

The Otters outshot the Storm 32-27 as the locals were limited to 14 shots after the first period. Guelph went 2-for-5 on the power play while Erie went 1-for-3.

Brayden Gillespie had 30 saves for the Storm while Kyle Downey had five in the first 10:50 for Erie and Nolan Lalonde had 15 the rest of the way.

The Storm (14-18-4-1) are tied for seventh in the Western Conference with the Soo Greyhounds (11-14-7-4) although the Greyhounds have a game in hand. Erie is 10th at 12-18-0-3.

The Storm and Otters are to meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Erie Insurance Arena.
