Storm stays close to home with under-18 draft picks

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm didn’t look far from the Royal City to claim the three players they took in Wednesday’s OHL under-18 draft.

The Storm took goaltender Tanner Wickware, a Milton native, seventh overall with their pick in the first round. The 6-foot-2, 168-pound netminder played for the Guelph Junior Gryphons this winter.

Every player selected in the draft played midget AAA hockey in the just-completed season.

In the second round, the Storm claimed Jacob Coulson from the Vaughan Kings. The 5-foot-10, 153-pound centre is from Caledon.

The Storm’s final pick was Guelphite David Mabey. The 6-foot-3, 173-pound defenceman played with the Waterloo Wolves.

Three other locals were among the 53 players picked in the draft.

Goaltender Riley McCabe of Arthur was selected in the first round, 14th overall, by the London Knights. He played with the Waterloo Wolves this winter.

Centre Griffin Wilson of Elora went to the Owen Sound Attack in the first round, 15th overall. Wilson, who’s 6-foot-3, 209 pounds, is from Elora.

Guelphite Eric Maltby, who played with the Guelph Junior Gryphons, was selected in the third round by the London Knights. He’s a 5-foot-11, 166-pound left winger.

Last year was the first year the league held an unde-18 draft. It was five rounds long and a total of 96 players were picked. This year’s draft was three rounds.

The Storm also took a goalie with their first-round pick last year when they selected James Walker from Windsor with the second overall pick. He played junior B hockey with the LaSalle Vipers this season.

Five of the players selected in last year’s draft played in the OHL this season.

Defenceman Victor Hadfield, the first overall pick, played 27 games in the regular season with the Barrie Colts this season.

Defenceman Emmett Serensits played 61 games with the Sudbury Wolves after they selected him in the first round, seventh overall.

Left winger Cameron Gaylor played 42 games with the Mississauga Steelheads after being selected in the first round, 13th overall, of the 2017 draft.

Defenceman Marko Jakovljevic, played 27 games with the Sarnia Stings after they took him in the second round, 28th overall.

Left winger Seva Losev was picked in the third round, 46th overall, by the Ottawa 67’s and he played 30 games with the 67’s this season.
