Storm stops Steelheads at Sleeman Centre

GUELPH – Cedric Ralph’s goal in the final minute of the second period proved to be the winner as the Guelph Storm defeated the Mississauga Steelheads 6-4 in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday at the Sleeman Centre.

That goal broke a 4-4 tie and came just less than a minute and a half after Mississauga had tied the score 59 seconds after the Storm had previously broken a tie in the game.

The teams had been tied 2-2 at the end of the first period.

Barret Kirwin connected for a pair of goals for the Storm while Liam Hawel, Owen Lalonde, Cedric Ralph and Nate Schnarr each had one. Zach Poirier and Schnarr each had two assists while Alexey Toropchenko, Jack Hanley, Hawel, Lalonde and Kirwin each had one.

James Hardie, Cole Schwindt, Ryan McLeod and Cole Carter scored for Mississauga and assists went to Michael Little, Liam Ham, Carter, Thomas Harley, Daniel Nardi and Keean Washkurak.

Mississauga outshot the Storm 39-36 and scored the game’s only power-play goal. The Steelheads had two power plays and the Storm had four.

Anthony Popovich had 35 saves for the win in the Guelph net while Jacob Ingham had 30 saves for Mississauga.

The Storm is third in the Midwest Division at 16-9-3-4. London Knights (22-5-2-1) lead and the Owen Sound Attack (19-11-1-2) is second.

Mississauga is third in the Central Division at 15-14-3-0. The loss was the ninth in 10 games for the Steelheads.

The Storm is to complete the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule Sunday with a 6:05 p.m. game against the Oshawa Generals at Oshawa’s Tribute Communities Centre.

The Storm is to return from the break with a pair of games against the Hamilton Bulldogs – Dec. 28 at home at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 29 at Hamilton at 4 p.m.
