Storm stretch win streak by slipping by Attack in OT
GUELPH – The Guelph Storm extended their winning streak to seven games after Daniil Chayka’s goal in overtime gave the hosts a 4-3 victory over the Owen Sound Attack In OHL play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.
The defending league champions never trailed in the game. After a scoreless first period, the Storm led 2-1 at the end of the second and they extended the lead with a power-play goal with 3:12 to go in regulation time.
However, Owen Sound didn’t throw in the towel, but tied the score to force OT with a pair of goals in the final three minutes of regulation time, the tying goal coming with 30 seconds to go in the third.
Pavel Gogolev, Josh Wainman, Cedric Ralph and Chayka scored for the Storm while Cooper Walker had two assists and Michael Bianconi, Ben McFarlane, Gogolev, Keegan Stevenson and Cam Hillis had one apiece.
Owen Sound’s goals were scored by Daylon Groulx, Adam McMaster and Matthew Philip while assists went to Sergey Popov, Carter Robertson, Aidan Dudas and Brady Lyle.
The Storm were outshot 35-27, but went 1-for-3 on their power play and held the Attack scoreless on two power plays.
Nico Daws turned aside 32 shots for the win in the Guelph net while Mack Guzda of the Attack took the loss. He had 23 saves.
Guelph (10-4-1-2), Owen Sound (10-6-2-1) and Erie Otters (9-6-2-3) are tied for the lead in the Midwest Division while the London Knights (10-5-1-1) are a point back in fourth.
The Storm are to host the Saginaw Spirit (second in the West Division at 12-6-1-1) Saturday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 4 p.m.
