Storm topples Steelheads for first win of preseason
GUELPH – The Guelph Storm collected their first victory of the Ontario Hockey League’s preseason Monday as they downed the Mississauga Steelheads 5-2 at the Sleeman Centre.
The Storm never trailed in the game although Mississauga pulled even with both of its goals. The hosts secured the win by scoring the game’s final three goals.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Guelph led 3-2 after the second.
Owen Lalonde, Cam Hillis, Jacob Maillet, Jacob Roach and Keegan Stevenson each scored a goal for the Storm while Roach also had two assists. Getting one assist apiece were Hillis, Andrei Bakanov, Luka Profaca, Cedric Ralph and Lalonde.
Ethan Del Mastro and James Hardie netted the goals for Mississauga while assists were awarded to Nicholas Canade, Richard Whittaker and Max Dodig.
Mississauga outshot the Storm 26-24 and neither team produced a power-play goal, Mississauga on one power play and the Storm on three.
Owen Bennett played the first half of the game in net for the Storm while Nico Daws played the second half. Bennett allowed two goals on 14 shots while Daws stopped all 12 shots her faced.
Joe Rangers was in net for Mississauga and he gave up four goals on 23 shots. The other goal was an empty-netter.
The result leaves the Storm at 1-2-0-0 and Mississauga at 2-1-0-0.
The Storm gets plenty of time to work out some preseason kinks before finishing their preseason with a pair of games against the Hamilton Bulldogs on consecutive days. They’re to play at the Sleeman Centre Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. and at Hamilton’s Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
The Storm are to open their regular season Sept. 20 at the Sleeman Centre with a game against the Ottawa 67’s. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
