Storm tops Attack to vacate conference basement

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm have climbed out of the Western Conference basement.

Max Namestnikov’s goal in a shootout lifted the Guelph Storm to a 4-3 victory over the Owen Sound Attack in OHL play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre. Namestnikov was the only one of the six shooters in the shootout to score.

The win was the third in a row for the Storm with all three wins coming at the Sleeman Centre.

Namestnikov also scored in regulation time to give him four goals and three assists with the Storm since they acquired him from the Sarnia Sting. He had the exact same scoring totals through 18 games with the Sting prior to the trade.

The Storm led 2-1 at the end of the first period, but trailed 3-2 after the second.

Cooper Walker forced the overtime and eventually the shootout when he scored for the locals at 13:05 of the third period.

Valentin Zhugin scored the other goal for the Storm while Michael Buchinger had two assists and Cam Allen, Danny Zhilkin, Matthew Poitras and Ben McFarlane each had one.

Kaleb Lawrence, Colby Barlow and Deni Goure had single goals for Owen Sound while Cedric Guindon collected two assists and Ethan Burroughs, Servac Petrovsky, Nolan Seed and Lawrence each picked up one assist.

The Storm outshot the Attack 27-24 and went 1-for-7 on their power play while the Attack went 1-for-3.

Brayden Gillespie had 21 saves for the Storm while Nick Chenard had 24 for Owen Sound.

The win lifts the Storm’s record to 7-12-2-1 and leaves then ninth in the Western Conference, one point ahead of the cellar-dwelling Kitchener Rangers (8-12-0-0). Owen Sound is second at 14-7-0-1.

The Storm and Attack are to play again Saturday at Owen Sound’s Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
