Storm trails by two games after Saginaw wins Game 2 in OT

SAGINAW – Ryan McLeod’s unassisted goal on a breakaway nearly seven minutes into overtime lifted the Saginaw Spirit to a 4-3 victory over the Guelph Storm Saturday night at the Dow Event Center in Game 2 of the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference final.

The goal gave Saginaw a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with both of the Spirit’s wins coming in Saginaw, Saturday’s game in front of a full house of 5,605.

Bode Wilde had scored a power-play goal for the Spirit with 1:17 to go in regulation time to force the extra time.

After a scoreless first period, the hosts grabbed a 2-1 lead by the end of the second. That score remained until the Storm scored back-to-back power-play goals 34 seconds apart with less than seven minutes to go in the third to take the lead.

Nick Suzuki, Isaac Ratcliffe and Markus Phillips scored the goals for Guelph while single assists went to Ratcliffe, MacKenzie Entwistle, Sean Durzi, Alexey Toropchenko and Liam Hawel.

Saginaw received goals from Damien Giroux, Cole Perfetti, Wilde and McLeod. Owen Tippett had two assists and McLeod and Brady Gilmour had one each.

The Storm outshot the Spirit 36-34 despite trailing 20-7 in that category at the end of the first period. They also went 2-for-3 on the power play while Saginaw went 1-for-2.

Anthony Popovich took the loss in net for the locals although he had 30 saves.

Ivan Prosvetov started in net for Saginaw, but was replaced with 5:42 to go in the third after he was ejected from the game after batting the puck into the crowd following a whistle. Prosvetov had 31 saves while his replacement, Tristan Lennox, stopped the two shots he faced in 12:17 of play.

Next two games in the series are to be at the Sleeman Centre as the teams are to play there Monday and Wednesday. Both matches carry 7 p.m. game times.

The Ottawa 67’s lead the Eastern Conference final 2-0 after claiming a 7-3 win over the Oshawa Generals Saturday in Ottawa. They 67’s and Generals are to play Sunday and Wednesday in Oshawa.
