Storm yields first goal, then clouts Kitchener

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm surrendered the opening goal of the game less than six minutes in, but it was all Storm after that as they clouted the Kitchener Rangers 8-1 in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday afternoon at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm, who outshot Kitchener 30-28, led 3-1 at the end of the first and 5-1 after the second.

Keegan Stevenson and Cam Hillis had two goals apiece for the Storm while Cedric Ralph, Daniil Chayka, Barret Kirwin and Dmitri Samorukov scored the other goals. Ryan Merkley assisted on three of the goals and Chayka, Nate Schnarr and Kirwin each had two assists and Samorukov, Jack Hanley, Hillis, Ty Collins, Domenico Commisso, Isaac Ratcliffe and Ralph had one each.

Alexey Lipanov scored for Kitchener, assisted by Rickard Hugg and Greg Meireles.

Anthony Popovich turned aside 27 shots for the win in the Guelph net while Lucas Pfeil had 22 saves for Kitchener.

Both teams had a single power-play goal, Kitchener on five power plays and the Storm on seven.

The win keeps the Storm in second in the Midwest Division and third in the Western Conference at 14-7-3-3. Kitchener is fourth in the division and eighth in the conference at 12-14-2-0.

The Storm has another trip north this weekend as they’re to play the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (17-7-4-1) in the first of three consecutive road games Friday at 7:07 p.m. at Sault Ste. Marie’s GFL Memorial Gardens.

They’re also to play the Sudbury Wolves (17-8-1-1) at Sudbury Saturday night and the Owen Sound Attack (15-11-1-2) at Owen Sound Dec. 11.
