
Storm’s comeback too little too late in loss to Kitchener
KITCHENER – The Guelph Storm left a comeback attempt a little too late as they were edged 4-3 by the Kitchener Rangers in OHL play Friday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
The Storm scored a pair of shorthanded goals in the final minute of the game to close the gap to the final single-goal margin, their third consecutive game and 19th of the season decided by one goal.

The Rangers led 2-0 at the end of the first period, 3-1 after the second and extended their lead to three goals at 13:24 of the third period on Francesco Pinelli’s second goal of the game.
However, Cooper Walker and Ben McFarlane scored in the final minute for the Storm to cut the gap back to a single goal.
Braeden Bowman scored Guelph’s other goal 35 seconds into the second period. Walker had two assists in the game while Max Namestnikov, McFarlane, Payton Robinson and Bowman each had one.
Carson Rehkopf and Francesco Arcuri had the other goals for Kitchener while Hunter Brzustewicz had two assists and Matthew Sop, Mitchell Martin, Pinelli, Arcuri and Lleyton Moore had one apiece.
The Rangers outshot the Storm 37-33 including a 17-7 advantage in the opening frame.
All of the Storm’s goals came on special teams as Bowman’s goal was a power-play marker. The Storm went 1-for-3 on their power play while Kitchener was scoreless on seven power plays.
Patrick Leaver had 33 saves for the Storm while Marco Costantini had 30 for Kitchener.
The result leaves the Storm third in the Midwest Division at 21-21-4-1 and the Rangers fourth at 20-22-2-0.
They hold down the final two playoff positions in the Western Conference as the Storm is seventh and the Rangers are eighth. Flint Firebirds are sixth at 22-22-3-1 and the Soo Greyhounds are ninth at 14-21-7-5.
The Storm and Rangers are to meet again Sunday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 2 p.m.
That’s to be the next game for the Storm while the Rangers are to play the Niagara IceDogs at St. Catharines Saturday at 7 p.m.
