Substitute Yates nets goal to give Gryphons soccer men victory
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons left it late to secure a victory over the Windsor Lancers in OUA men’s soccer play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex and it took a goal by a substitute to get the job done.
A goal by rookie Gray Yates, a Guelph native, with less than 11 minutes to go in regulation time gave the Gryphs a 1-0 win over Windsor. He had entered the game 11 minutes earlier. Alexander Zis set up the goal.

The Gryphs scored the one-goal win after dominating the match. They outshot the Lancers 15-4 and 6-3 on shots that reached the net. Zis and Mitch Lefebvre each took four shots for Guelph while Colin Gander and Jack Sears took two apiece.
The hosts also took nine corner kicks, seven more than Windsor.
It was the second meeting between the teams in less than a week, something that is the norm in the OUA league this year. The teams fought to a 1-1 tie in Windsor Wednesday in their season openers.
Svyatoslav Artemenko picked up the shutout.
Next up for the Gryphs (1-0-1) is the Western Mustangs (1-0-1). They’re to play Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex and Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at Western’s Mustangs Field.
