Tavistock slips by Minto 81’s in shootout
PALMERSTON – The Tavistock Royals scored in a shootout to edge the Minto 81’s 6-5 in WOAA senior men’s hockey league play Sunday at the Palmerston arena.
The teams had battled evenly throughtout the game as both started with three goals in the first period. Tavistock had the lone goal of the second and the Royals extended their lead early in the third.
The host 81’s rallied to send it into an overtime period that would end up scoreless. Kalob Witzell’s goal for Minto with 3:30 to go in regulation time tied it up.
Wade Pfeffer, Brendon Aitken, Austin Gaboury and Adam Kawawlec had the other goals for Minto. Jake Pleon and Pfeffer each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Gaboury, Chris Hardie, Brady Anderson, Denver Hill, Kawawlec and Kyle Ellis.
Ben Kirwin, Trevor Sauder, Deven Kropf, Matt Gaetz and Zach Lorentz each had a goal in regulation time for Tavistock. Paul Thompson collected two assists while Spencer MacCormack, Jared Prekup, Sauder, Tristan Hohl, Brent Rae and Mitch Facey each had one.
Marc Williams started in goal for the 81’s, but was replaced by Thomas Gainer at the beginning of the second. Gainer went the rest of the way. Zach Shomphe played the entire game in goal for the Royals.
Tavistock (3-2-0-1) climbs to fifth place in the 14-team league with the win while Minto (1-3-0-1) falls into a tie for 12th with the Lucknow Lancers (1-2-0-1).
The 81’s are to host the Ripley Wolves (4-0-1-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
