Third-period goals allow Mohawks to extend lead in series
THOROLD – The Elora Mohawks grabbed a four-goal lead in the first period, but needed four goals in the third to claim a 9-6 victory over the St. Catharines Spartans in Ontario junior B lacrosse playoff action Sunday night at the Thorold Community Arena.
The win gives Elora a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Western Conference quarter-final series.
The Mohawks led 5-1 at the end of the first period before St. Catharines pulled even with four goals in the second. Elora regained the lead with a shorthanded goal 4:48 into the third.
Zack Cameron and Brett Harrison each had a pair of goals for the Mohawks while single goals were netted by Nathan Bolger, Dawson Bolger, Logan Cameron, Louie Ristov and Ryan Mueller. Trent Spear assisted on three of the goals and Zack Cameron and Nathan Bolger each had two assists and Dawson Bolger, Jacob Black and Dean Sealey each had one.
St. Catharines received two goals apiece from Sam LeClair and Alex Gaston while Blair Pachereva and Tyler Kolodka each had one goal. LeClair and Pachereva each had two assists while single assists were given to Gaston, Kolodka, Mitchell Geoffroy, Aaron Ward and Christian Lefeuvre.
The Spartans outshot the Mohawks 49-42 and both teams had a single power-play goal, St. Catharines on four power plays and Elora on seven.
Ryan Fitzgerald turned aside 43 shots to get the win in the Elora net while Adam Brennan had 33 saves for St. Catharines.
The series is to return to the Elora and District Community Centre Wednesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
