Third-period goals lift Patriots to victory

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots scored a pair of goals early in the third period to edge the Mitchell Hawks 3-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Mitchell’s Evan Chaffe had opened the scoring in the final two minutes of the first period. Nathan Hall and Luken Van Pelt assisted on the play.

Brendon Aitken tied it for Mount Forest at 1:06 of the third with help from Ryley Cribbin and Ryan Maksymyk.

Michael Stefanelli fired the winner for the Patriots just less than two and a half minutes later. Assists were given to Blair Butchart and Derek Williams.

The Patriots outshot Mitchell 32-30 while neither team recorded a power-play goal. Mitchell had three power plays while the Patriots had one.

David Lobsinger picked up the win in net while Tyler Parr took the loss for Mitchell.

Mount Forest leads the Pollock Division at 11-2-0-0 while Mitchell is third at 9-5-1-0.

The Patriots are to play the Goderich Flyers (3-9-0-1) Sunday at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex. Game time is 2 p.m.
