Third-period outburst gives Storm first win of season

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm struck for five goals in the third period including four in the final 12 and a half minutes to drop the Owen Sound Attack 6-2 in OHL play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The win was the first of the season for the Storm who had two losses, one in overtime, last week.

The Storm never trailed in the game. They scored the lone goal of the first period and Owen Sound responded with the only goal of the second to tie it up.

Isaac Ratcliffe finished with a pair of goals, the final two of the game, while rookies Danill Chayka and Ty Collins scored their very first OHL regular-season goals. Alexey Toropchenko and Liam Hawel also scored. Assists were awarded to Mason Primeau, Cedric Ralph, Cam Hillis, Owen Lalonde, Ratcliffe, Mark Woolley, Chayka, Barret Kirwin, Hawel, Ryan Merkley and Nate Schnarr.

Alan Lyszczarczyk and Aidan Dudas responded with single goals for Owen Sound. Getting one assist each were Jackson Doherty, Daylon Groulx, Brady Lyle and Maksim Sushko.

The Storm was outshot 33-31 and neither team netted a power-play goal, Owen Sound on two power plays and Guelph on three.

Guelph did win 40 of the game’s 64 faceoffs.

Anthony Popovich turned aside 31 shots for the win in the Storm net while Mack Guzda took the loss. He stopped 20 shots before being relieved by Andrew MacLean with 6:16 to play. MacLean made five saves.

The result leaves the Storm at 1-1-1-0 and Owen Sound at 1-2-0-0.

The Storm is to play the Saginaw Spirit (1-2-0-0) Saturday at 7:05 at the Dow Event Center.
