Third-period trio of goals lifts Regals to victory

WALLACEBURG – The Guelph Regals scored the final three goals of their Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League game against the Wallaceburg Red Devils Sunday at the Wallaceburg Memorial Arena to make it a winning weekend road trip.

After posting a win over the Point Edward Pacers in Point Edward Saturday, the third-period trio of goals by the Regals gave them a 9-8 victory over the Red Devils.

While the hosts had a two-goal lead midway through the first period, the Regals battled back to shoot ahead early in the second. However, Wallaceburg regained its two-goal advantage in the first seven minutes of the third before the Regals came back again.

A pair of Guelph goals 56 seconds apart tied the score by the midway mark of the third to set the stage for a winning, power-play goal by Dylan Goddard with 6:40 to play. It would be the final goal of the game.

Wallaceburg had led 4-3 at the end of the first period and 7-6 after the second.

Goddard and Dylan Davey scored twice apiece for the Regals while single goals were added by Sam MacDonald, Parker Lock, Sam Savery, Ethan Keleher and Owen Orpana. Lock collected four assists while Marcus Keleher had three, Davey and Orpana had two apiece and Savery, Ethan Keleher and Caelan Brady each had one.

Cohen Veenstra, Mason Myers-Whiteye and Ty Myers netted two goals apiece for Wallaceburg while Shaun Glover-Noah and Reece Parker fired home single goals. Kaelen Smith gathered four assists while Veenstra and Myers had two apiece. Single assists were awarded to goalkeeper Mason Jacobs, Myers-Whiteye, Colton Noah and Shayne Logan.

The Regals outshot the Red Devils 57-44 and their winning goal was their lone power-play score on six power plays. Wallaceburg went 1-for-4 on its power play.

Ty Fox-Trudel had 36 saves in the Guelph net while Jacobs had 48 for Wallaceburg.

The result leaves the Regals at 5-2-0, tied for second in the Western Conference with the Elora Mohawks who have a game in hand at 5-1-0. Six Nations Rebels lead at 6-0-0.

Wallaceburg falls to 1-3-0.

Marcus Keleher (18 goals-18 assists) and Orpana (17-17) are second and fourth respectively in league scoring.

The Regals are to host the London Blue Devils (1-3-0) Friday at 8 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena in the first of three consecutive Friday night home games.
