Third-period trio of goals sparks Storm to win over Petes

GUELPH – Three goals in 65 seconds early in the third period propelled the Guelph Storm to a 5-4 victory over the Peterborough Petes in OHL play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The trio of goals allowed the Storm to post their fifth win in six games in 2023.

Actually, the teams combined for four goals in 81 seconds in the first six minutes of the third as the Petes scored their final goal of the game 16 seconds after the Storm had scored their final goal of the match.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Peterborough led 3-2 after the second.

Matthew Poitras, Braeden Bowman, Ben McFarlane, Chandler Romeo and Jesse Fishman collected a goal apiece for the hosts. Single assists were awarded to Max Namestnikov, Bowman, Jake Murray, Cooper Walker, Charlie Paquette, Jake Karabela and Isaac Enright.

Connor Lockhart had a pair of goals for Peterborough while single markers were added by Owen Beck and J.R. Avon. Tucker Robertson assisted on three of the goals while Samuel Mayer had two assists and Brennan Othmann, Avon and Cam Gauvreau had one apiece.

The Petes outshot the Storm 28-25, but were scoreless on four power plays while the Storm went 1-for-6 on their power play.

Patrick Leaver, who had a win and three losses in net for the Oshawa Generals in games against the Petes before his trade to the Storm a couple of weeks ago, picked up the win in the Guelph net with 24 saves. Michael Simpson had 20 saves for Peterborough.

The Storm are seventh in the Western Conference at 18-19-4-1 while Peterborough is fourth in the Eastern Conference at 23-16-1-2.

The Storm are to host the Kingston Frontenacs (20-19-1-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
