Third win in a row puts Patriots in North Conference final

WINGHAM – The Mount Forest Patriots are headed to the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s North Conference final for the third consecutive year.

The Patriots wrapped up the Pollock Division final Saturday night with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Wingham Ironmen at Wingham’s North Huron Wescast Community Complex. That was Mount Forest’s third consecutive win in the series and gave the Patriots a 4-2 series victory.

It was the third consecutive year that the Patriots and Wingham met in the playoffs. However, the Ironmen showed the progress they’d made as the previous two meetings had been first-round 4-0 sweeps by Mount Forest.

Saturday, the Patriots led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 4-0 after the second.

Ryley Cribbin and Michael Stefanelli each had two goals for the Patriots while Thomas Coulter, Brady Becker and Jacob Miller added one apiece. Troy Weber assisted on three of the goals and Jack Birkett and Thomas Haffner had two assists apiece and Cribbin, Klayton Hoelscher and Jack Francis had one each.

Kyle Stanbury scored a power-play goal for Wingham with 4:52 to go in the game to ruin the shutout bid for Mount Forest netminder Aidan Quish. That was the only shot of Wingham’s 33 to get by Quish. Rhys Vollmer assisted on the play.

Mount Forest had 34 shots on net and went 1-for-4 on its power play while Wingham went 1-for-3.

Devon Carson took the loss in net for Wingham. He had 10 saves before being replaced by Jamie Brock after Mount Forest’s fourth goal. Brock made 17 saves the rest of the way.

The Patriots advance to play the Carruthers Division champion Alliston Hornets in the North Conference final for the second time in three years. The Hornets won 4-1 in 2017 while the Stayner Siskins won 4-1 last year.

Alliston swept the Penetang Kings in the Carruthers final, finishing the series with a 5-4 win in Penetang Wednesday.

The North Conference winner advances to the league’s semifinals along with the East, South and West Conference champions.

The Uxbridge Bruins and Napanee Raiders are to battle in the East final.

The Wellesley Apple Jacks will play either the Glanbrook Rangers or Grimsby Peach Kings in the South final.

The Lakeshore Canadiens and Exeter Hawks are to play in the West final.
