Thistles erupt for eight in a row in win over Wilmot

KITCHENER – The Fergus Thistles rebounded from a single-goal deficit eight and a half minutes into their game with the Wilmot Wild by scoring eight consecutive goals to take control on their way to a 14-8 victory Sunday afternoon.

The Thistles led the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game at Queensmount Arena 7-3 at the end of the first period and 11-5 after the second.

Jon-James Lavigne struck for four goals for the victors while Keegan Detweiler had a hat trick and Owen Tovell and Zack Ranahan each scored twice. Single goals were added by Brock Redwood, Carter Coffey and Curtis Dietrich while Aiden Mcdougall and J.J. Swanston each had three assists, Tovell, Redwood and Coffey each had two and Detweiler, Ranahan, Connor Willmets and goalkeeper Eric Krauter had one apiece.

Wilmot received single goals from Nathan Coverdale, Carsen Besse, Kyler Morgan, Joel Snider, EJ Keleher, Klay O’Keefe, Alex Ptolemy-French and Ethan Warden. Ethan Fitton assisted on two of the goals while Coverdale, Besse, Morgan, Eric Snyder, Jacob O’Sullivan, Eric Chilton, Landon Krysko and Dawson Bloch each had one.

All four goalies saw time in the game. For Fergus, Krauter started and allowed six goals on 55 shots before being replaced by Ethan Bratton at 11:53 of the third period. Bratton yielded two goals on 14 shots.

Emmett Styres and Aidan Kelly played approximately half the game each for Wilmot. Styres surrendered four goals on 31 shots and Kelly gave up 10 goals on 23 shots.

Wilmot outshot the Thistles 77-68.

The game was a sometime chippy affair with Fergus being assessed 66 minutes in penalties and Wilmot 20. Fergus’s total included two high-sticking majors and a game misconduct for two major penalties for Swanston, a high-sticking major and game misconduct for Ewan Mackie and a roughing major for Evan Palmer. All of Wilmot’s penalties were minors.

Fergus leads the West Division at 3-0-0 and are the division’s lone unbeaten team. Wilmot falls to 1-2-0.

The Thistles are to play the Halton Hills Bulldogs (1-1-0) Monday at 8 p.m. at the Mold-Masters Sportsplex in Georgetown.
