Thistles fall behind early, rebound to trounce Brantford

BRANTFORD – The Fergus Thistles rebounded from an early two-goal deficit to drop the Brantford Warriors 14-6 in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League play Friday night at the Brantford and District Civic Centre.

The Thistles surrendered a pair of goals to Justin Brennecke 53 seconds apart in the first five minutes of the game before rallying for the victory.

Three goals later in the opening period put the Thistles ahead for good and they stretched their lead to 10-5 by the end of the second period.

Brinley Wilson and Keegan Detweiler each had four goals and two assists for the Thistles while Carter Coffey tallied twice and Aiden McDougall, Garret Warnaar, Owen Tovell and Terrance Barrina added single goals. J.J. Swanston had six assists while Aiden Cormack had two and Coffey, Aiden McDougall and Ryan McDougall had one apiece.

Brennecke finished the game with a hat trick for Brantford while Mitchell Page had two goals and Braedon Mair had one.

The Thistles outshot the Warriors 61-32 and went 6-for-8 on their power play while Brantford went 1-for-2 on its power play and also scored two shorthanded goals.

Tyson Reeves had 26 saves in net for Fergus while Jacob Moir and Trystan Williams shared the goaltending chores for Brantford. Moir had 12 saves and yielded two goals while Williams had 33 saves and gave up 12 goals.

Fergus is second in the West Division at 9-2-0 while Brantford is fourth at 6-5-0.

The Thistles are to play the sixth-place Halton Hills Bulldogs (2-10-0) at Georgetown’s Mold-Masters Sportsplex Monday at 8 p.m.
