Thistles finish off Halton Hills in West quarter-final
GEORGETOWN – The Fergus Thistles completed a two-game sweep of the Halton Hills Bulldogs in the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League’s West Division quarter-finals Monday with a 7-4 victory at Alcott arena.
The Thistles broke a 3-3 tie with four consecutive goals starting with 7:14 to go in the second period.
Fergus had led 3-2 at the end of the first period before Halton Hills tied it with a power-play goal four minutes into the second. The Thistles shot ahead just under nine minutes later and added three in a row in the third to secure the win.
The victory gave the Thistles a 2-0 win in the best-of-three series.
Nick Aitchison fired home a hat trick for the Thistles while Carter Hyndman tallied twice and Brodie Schafer and Adam Lantz added single goals. Lantz and Sam MacDonald each had two assists while Cameron Angst, Hyndman, Aitchison, Jeremy Goodwin, Jake Bauman and Trenton Hitchcock had one each.
Jackson Webster scored twice for Halton Hills while Hayden Chokrev-Evans and Zac Tarr also scored. Michael Holmes had two assists and single assists were awarded to Cody Merritt, Tarr, Chase Forsythe and goalkeeper Carter Browne.
Xavier DeMichele had the win in net for Fergus while Browne took the loss for Halton Hills.
Shots on net were not reported.
Halton Hills went 2-for-9 on its power play while Fergus went 1-for-6.
Fergus had finished third in the regular season at 11-5-0 while Halton Hills was sixth at 2-13-1.
The Thistles advance to play the Wilmot Wild in the best-of-five division semifinals. Dates for the series are to be determined.
The other West semifinal has the Brantford Warriors playing the Barrie Bombers.
Brantford and Wilmot had byes in the division quarter-finals while Barrie swept the Caledon Bandits 2-0.
Wilmot finished second in the division with a 12-4-0 record and won two of the three regular-season meetings with the Thistles. The Wild won 10-7 in overtime at Fergus May 16 and 8-7 at Baden June 23 in the final game of the regular season for the Thistles. The Thistles won 11-5 at Baden May 26.
This will be the fourth consecutive year that the Thistles and Wild will have meet in the playoffs. Wilmot won the division final 3-0 in 2016 while Fergus took the division semifinal 3-0 in 2017. The Wild won the division semifinal 3-0 last year.
