Thistles hand Brantford first setback of season

FERGUS – Three goals in just less than three and a half minutes in the third period broke a deadlock and sparked the Fergus Thistles to a 9-6 victory over the Brantford Warriors in Ontario junior C lacrosse league play Tuesday night at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.

The Thistles never trailed in the game, but Brantford scored three in a row to tie the game at 5-5 a little more than three minutes into the final period. Fergus responded with its three-goal outburst to go ahead for good.

The loss was the first of the season for Brantford.

The Thistles led 4-2 at the end of the first period and 5-4 after the second.

Fergus also took advantage of an abundance of Brantford penalties as the Thistles went 5-for-14 on their power play while the Warriors were 2-for-3. Brantford also scored two shorthanded goals.

Trenton Hitchcock scored four times for Fergus while Brodie Schafer had three goals and four assists and Cameron Angst and Carter Hyndman each added single goals. Adam Lantz collected five assists while Angst had three, Hyndman had two and Jake Bauman and Alec Beaurogard each had one.

Ryan Dorr tallied twice for Brantford while the other goals were scored by Connor Merritt, Nick D’amico, Quinn Drysdale and Trevor McDonald. Caleb Wells collected two assists and single assists were awarded to McDonald, Max Lewis, Herman Wagnleithner, Dalton Thomas and Merritt.

Tyson Reeves turned aside 24 shots to get the win in the Fergus net while Brantford netminder Jacob Moir had 36 saves.
