Thistles lose to Wilmot to finish regular season
BADEN – The Fergus Thistles wrapped up their Ontario junior C lacrosse league’s regular season with an 8-7 loss to the Wilmot Wild Sunday afternoon at the Wilmot Recreation Centre.
The result leaves Wilmot atop the West Division at 12-4-0 while Fergus finishes at 11-5-0. Brantford Warriors are at 11-3-0 with two games to play and the Barrie Bombers are at 10-5-0 with a game to play.
Sunday’s Fergus-Wilmot match was a weird one scoring wise as the teams combined for 11 goals in the second period, but neither scored in the third. They had been tied 2-2 after the first.
McCaiden Dixon and Carter Hyndman scored twice each for the Thistles while single goals were added by Sam MacDonald, Trenton Hitchcock and Nick Aitchison. Dixon collected three assists while MacDonald, Hitchcock, Adam Lantz and Jake Bauman each had two and Hyndman and J.J. Swanston had one each.
Tyler Nagy and Kent Radbourne fired home two goals apiece for Wilmot while Ethan Warden, Cody Hudson, Dylan Kuntz and Derek Jensen also scored. Hayden Berger had three assists while Tyler Townsend, Matt Wyman and Caleb Martin had two each and Warden, Evan Girdler and Colten Besse had one each.
Xavier DeMichele was tagged for the loss in the Fergus net while Caleb Martin picked up the win for Wilmot. He played the first two periods and Reyd Fitton played the third.
Both teams went 0-for-3 on their power plays.
Both teams will be idle this week as Barrie and Brantford play out the remainder of their regular-season games. Barrie is to play the Oakville Buzz (2-11-0) at Oakville Saturday night while Brantford is to host the Caledon Bandits (3-12-0) Friday night and Oakville Sunday afternoon.
