Thistles open their playoffs with win over Brantford

FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles struck for the first seven goals of the game as they opened their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoffs with a 12-5 victory over the Brantford Warriors Saturday at the Centre Wellington District Community Sportsplex.

The game was the first game of a best-of-five West Division semifinal. The Thistles had a bye in the quarter-finals after finishing atop the division at the completion of the regular season while Brantford edged the Six Nations Stealth 3-2 in a best-of-five divisional quarter-final.

The Thistles finished the regular season at 16-2-0 while Brantford was fourth at 8-9-1.

Fergus and Brantford met three times during the regular season with the Thistles winning all three – 9-6 at Elora April 23, 14-6 at Brantford June 3 and 16-3 at Fergus June 12.

Saturday, Fergus led 6-0 at the end of the first period and 11-4 after the second.

Carter Coffey led the Thistles with five goals while Jon-James Lavigne scored four times. Keegan Detweiler had two goals while Owen Tovell had the other goal. J.J. Swanston assisted on seven goals while Brock Reinhart had three assists and Lavigne and Detweiler each had two assists. Getting one assist apiece were Coffey, Curtis Dietrich, Kaiden Patterson, Aiden McDougall and Cole Doherty.

Mitchell Page tallied twice for Brantford while Andrew Hamilton, Aiden Wilson and Justin Brennecke added single goals.

Shots on net were not recorded.

Ethan Bratton picked up the win in net for the Thistles while

Second game of the series is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Brantford and District Civic Centre while the third game is to go Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Fergus.
