Thistles pay for penalties against unbeaten Wilmot

PLATTSVILLE – The Fergus Thistles surrendered four consecutive power-play goals in the second period as they suffered a 16-12 loss to the Wilmot Wild in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League play Thursday night at the Plattsville Arena.

Penalties proved costly for both teams in the game. Wilmot finished with seven power-play goals, six of them in the second period, while Fergus finished with five power-play goals. The man-advantage goals for the Thistles included the final four goals of the game that were scored in the final 4:30 to make the score close.

The teams each also scored a shorthanded goal.

Wilmot led 5-3 at the end of the first period and 12-7 after the second.

Rory Peters and Evan McDougall had hat tricks for Fergus while Aiden McDougall and Cooper Fleet scored twice each. Jarrett Lavigne and Eddie McDonald added single goals while Evan McDougall collected three assists. Getting two assists apiece were Aiden McDougall and Fleet while single assists were given to Logan Joyes, Jesse Peate, Brodie Rice, Connor Schmidt, Lavigne and McDonald.

Ethan Warden had four goals for Wilmot while EJ Keleher recorded a hat trick. Zakary Holmes and Jack Buiter had two goals apiece and Eric Snyfer, Nathan Coverdale, Chase Forsythe, Brandon Abbott and Everett Herder each netted single goals. Owyn Smith and Troy MacDonald collected three assists apiece while Snyder, Holmes and James Oberle each had two and Warden, Forsythe, Eric Chilton, Abbott and Ethan Fitton each had one.

Wilmot outshot the Thistles 52-44.

Eric Krauter had 36 saves in the Fergus net while Jack Baird had 32 saves for Wilmot.

The Wild leads the Western Conference at 7-0-0 while the Thistles trail at 0-5-0. In between are the Barrie Bombers (5-3-0), Six Nations Stealth (4-2-0), Brantford Warriors (2-3-0), Orangeville Northmen (2-4-0) and Halton Hills Bulldogs (2-5-0).

The Thistles are to host Brantford at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex Sunday at 8 p.m. and Orangeville Wednesday at 8 p.m.
