Thistles pull away in third to top Caledon
FERGUS – Just when the Caledon Bandits got close, the Fergus Thistles hit for the final three goals of the game to secure an 11-7 victory in Ontario junior C lacrosse league play Saturday night at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.
Caledon got the gap down to a single goal in the opening minute of the third period, but were held scoreless after that.
The Thistles led 5-3 at the end of the first period and 8-6 after the second.
Nick Aitchison turned in an eight-point performance for the Thistles as he had five goals and three assists. Carter Hyndman scored twice while single goals were netted by Sam MacDonald, Jake Bauman, Jacob Hayne and J.J. Swanston who also had four assists. Adam Lantz and Brodie Schafer each had three assists while Alec Beaurogard, Hyndman and Cameron Angst had two apiece and MacDonald, Bauman and Trenton Hitchcock each had one.
Andrew Rybka had three goals and three assists for Caledon while Jarett Petrie had two goals and four assists and Logan Lowrie scored the other two goals. Cole Goodwin collected three assists and Hughie Sheppard, Zack Dorval and Jordan McArthur each had one.
Fergus outshot Caledon 45-40 and each team had two power-play goals, the Thistles on six power plays and the Bandits on eight.
Tyson Reeves picked up the win in the Fergus net with 33 saves. Hunter Hartley had 27 saves in the Caledon net, but took the loss in relief of starter Trevor Wilson who had seven saves in the first 13:44 of the game.
The Thistles improve to 9-4-0 with the win while Caledon falls to 3-7-0.
The Thistles are idle until June 17 when they’re to play the Halton Hills Bulldogs (1-9-0) at Georgetown’s Mold-Master arena. Game time is 8 p.m.
